A pocket door slides between the wall layers and the door is installed when the wall is framed. Standard pocket door frames are made to be installed within an interior 2 by 4 wall and therefore they are just wide enough to accommodate the door and a half inch of sheet rock on both sides of the frame. They used to be very popular in wealthy houses from the end of the nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. They are hung from the top by means of a rail which is mounted on the door frame header.
